Choosing the right travel insurance

Making sure you’re completely covered for your trip

From adventure activities to extended trips overseas, your holidays are as unique as you. So it’s really important to make sure you’ve got everything covered – so you can get on and enjoy your trip.

Here are some of the top things to check before you pack your bags.

Cover for the cost of your trip

Whether you’re off on a short break or a luxury vacation, holiday costs can vary from hundreds to thousands before you’ve even set off. So make sure that you choose a policy that provides enough cover, especially if you’re forced to cancel at the last minute.

It’s a good idea to check you’re covered for:

  • Any pre-booked excursions you might have organised
  • Accommodation costs if your hotel or villa is damaged by severe weather
  • Travel disruption (for example, if you miss a connecting flight due to airspace closure

Cover for medical costs

It’s easy to underestimate how expensive healthcare can be outside of the UK, particularly if you have an accident and need hospital treatment (which could cost thousands of pounds).

If you’re travelling to Europe, make sure you take a European Health Insurance Card (or, EHIC)  with you as this will entitle you to a reduced rate or free emergency treatment in most European destinations. But do keep in mind that an EHIC won’t cover you for everything.

Our Travel Insurance can help cover extra costs like private healthcare, or the cost of getting you home if you need assistance (for example, if you need to be flown back to the UK from overseas accompanied by a doctor or nurse).

Cover for your valuables and gadgets

With our standard travel cover, your baggage and belongings are protected as long as you’ve left them somewhere safe (like the boot of a locked car), but this doesn’t apply to all insurers and won’t always cover those extra special valuables.

If you’re travelling with gadgets (like an tablet computer or jewellery), it’s a good idea to double check your policy details – as well as your home insurance cover if you’re travelling in the UK.

If you do need to add extra cover, we offer additional baggage and personal belongings cover, so if your expensive items like cameras, phones and tablets are damaged or stolen, it doesn’t have to  ruin your holiday.

Take a look at our travel insurance policy add-ons for more details of what you can cover.

Cover for adventures and active holidays

Standard travel insurance doesn’t always provide the cover you'll need for active holidays. Normally winter sports, scuba diving and golf trips aren’t included, so you’ll need to buy additional cover. Especially if you’re taking expensive equipment with you.

Make sure you declare all the leisure activities you aim to enjoy – particularly if these are the main reason you’re going away (eg a ski holiday to the slopes). And double check your standard cover – as well as any add-ons you might want to take out – to make sure you’re insured while out adventuring.

Emergency assistance

Having an insurer you can contact any time, day or night, can make all the difference. For example, if you need emergency medical treatment or need to cancel your holiday, you’ll want to get hold of someone quickly.

We’re here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year if you need us – at home or abroad.

Don’t forget to pack a copy of your policy documents before you head off – so you’ll have all your details to hand if you do need to get in touch with us.
