Multiple cars doesn't have to mean the headache of multiple policies

Multiple cars doesn't have to mean the headache of multiple policies

Take a glance down any UK street or into most driveways and cars will be a common sight. As regular drivers will verify, our roads are getting busier.

Much of this increase can be attributed to the rising number of households with more than one vehicle. Today, 53% of all households have at least two cars, compared with just 31% in the mid 1980s.

And, it looks as though this trend is set to continue, with factors such as the rise in two-job households (up from 32% in the ‘80s to 60% today) and the growing number of graduates returning home to their parents after university (double in the past 20 years) contributing to the growing need for more than one car per home.

Many of these households with more than one car have discovered the benefits of combining their motor insurance into a single policy, managing the premium as they would other shared domestic expenses. Aviva MultiCar was launched in April 2011 and we already have more than 100,000 multiple vehicle policies. This means that over 230,000 vehicles are now covered, benefiting from all the features of an Aviva MultiCar policy.

It normally costs less to have an Aviva MultiCar policy than a set of single policies - with discounts of up to 1/3 available when you insure a second or subsequent car or van* (we expect 20% of customers to achieve the maximum saving). It also means just one set of paperwork and one premium to review each year.

You can normally insure up to five cars or vans per household under a single policy, with one person named as the policyholder and the others listed as the main driver of their own vehicle. One important thing to remember is that this doesn’t automatically mean you can drive each others’ cars – so check your cover first.

While Aviva MultiCar cover continues to grow in popularity, here are some common misconceptions which have prevented more people from making the change:

My no claim discount (NCD) will be affected if another driver has an accident. In fact, each vehicle's NCD is calculated and treated entirely independently. Therefore an accident involving one vehicle on the policy will only affect the NCD on that vehicle and not others on the policy.

Everyone must have a similar driving record. It’s common for young drivers who’ve yet to earn a discount to share a multi car policy with experienced drivers.

We must all have exactly the same cover. An Aviva MultiCar policy offers all the benefits of single vehicle cover, so it's easy for each vehicle to have different cover levels and optional extras.

We all have to be related. The only requirement is that everyone shares the same address.

It’s complicated to set up an Aviva MultiCar policy. It couldn’t be simpler, you can take out a new policy or, if you already have a motor policy with us, you can change your vehicle details if you buy a different car or van during your cover period.

In certain circumstances it can be better to stick to separate policies but, in most cases, the advantages of combining cover are clear, so it’s worth checking whether you’re one of the households that can make life simpler. Explore in more detail to see if our Aviva MulitCar policy would be right for you.

Up to 1/3 off applied to the cheaper of the two vehicle insurance premiums. Discount does not apply to optional extras. Maximum 1/3 discount available on policies with either one driver, or two drivers who are domestic partners using their vehicles only for social domestic and pleasure.
