Data: Causes of Cancer

Although most cancers appear to be caused by several factors, including inherited ones, a main environmental cause can often be identified for a particular cancer. The most common carcinogens (cancer-causing agents), such as tobacco smoke, are avoidable. Smoking has caused a major lung cancer epidemic throughout the world.

Carcinogens in the environment

Although radiation other than sunlight is commonly cited as a cause of cancer, its contribution is actually very small.
