Self-help: Encouraging your Child to Eat

If your child is overly fussy about certain food or refuses to eat, the following hints may be helpful:

  • Keep the atmosphere relaxed at mealtimes. Do not put pressure on your child to eat everything on his or her plate.

  • Serve small portions. You can always give second helpings.

  • Avoid too many snacks and excessive fluids between meals.

  • Be imaginative when preparing food. Cut sandwiches into decorative shapes and create “pictures” on the plate with fruit and vegetables.

  • Do not persist in offering rejected foods. Keep them off the menu for a week or two.

  • Avoid distractions, such as toys or television, at mealtimes.
