Self-help: Maximizing your Chance of Conception

The overall health of both partners has an important effect on fertility. You may find that following the self-help measures here improves your chance of conception:

  • Make sure your weight is in or near the normal range (see Are you a healthy weight?).

  • Eat a healthy diet.

  • Do not smoke.

  • Cut down on alcohol, which is known to reduce the sperm count and can damage the fetus if pregnancy occurs.

  • Have sex every day at the woman’s most fertile time, in the middle of the menstrual cycle.

  • Try not to worry, because stress can lower your fertility. Learn relaxation exercises to lower your stress levels.

  • Men should avoid taking hot baths or using saunas.
