Self-help: Preventing Bacterial Cystitis

If you have had bacterial cystitis, the following measures can help you to avoid further attacks:

  • Drink 2–3 litres (4–6 pints) of fluids each day. Drink even more in hot weather.

  • Empty your bladder frequently and completely.

  • Be careful about hygiene. After a bowel movement, wipe yourself from front to back to prevent bacteria around the anus from entering the urethra.

  • Wash your genital area before sexual intercourse. Make sure your partner washes, too.

  • Pass urine shortly after having sexual intercourse.

  • Use unperfumed toiletries and avoid vaginal deodorants.

  • Do not use a diaphragm or spermicide for contraception.
