Self-help: Preventing Malaria

If you plan to visit an area where malaria occurs, your doctor will be able to advise you on antimalarial drugs for that area. You may need to start taking the drugs up to 3 weeks before you leave, and continue during and for 1–4 weeks after your visit; the timings depend on the drugs taken. To protect yourself against mosquito bites:

  • Keep your body covered as much as possible.

  • Sleep under a mosquito net that is impregnated with insecticide.

  • Use insect repellent on clothes and exposed skin.

These measures against mosquito bites are especially important between dusk and dawn, when malaria-carrying mosquitoes bite.
