Some people prefer keeping fitness private, but a Gym membership may be just the motivation you’re looking for. New trainers, a Gym membership, and a place to focus on getting fitter and healthier.
Is it hard to start going to the gym?
Well, if you’ve never set foot in a Gym before, your first visit can be un-nerving. You may feel out of place up against all those lean, trim bodies, which is why some people only go for a couple of months. However, if you plan ahead, then it’s not embarrassing: with some helpful advice tucked up your sleeve (or into your jogging bottoms), it can be a brilliant way to get fitter and healthier.
Top tips for going to a Gym
- Be realistic
A 6am-trip five times a week probably won’t last if you haven’t done it before. Be realistic about how often you can go. Even if it’s just once a fortnight or once a month, it’s all about forming new ‘good’ habits. Once you’re in the habit you might decide to go more often.
- Don’t overdo it
Don’t start with a marathon workout. You’ll probably go home aching and wondering what on earth you were thinking about, going to a Gym in the first place. Set small goals. Aim for 15 minutes the first time, and if that’s not too hard, add another ten minutes. Build up gradually.
- Ask for help
Sign up to a beginner’s session and you won’t be the only nervous novice. And even when you’ve been going for a while, if the machine you’re standing in front of looks like a medieval torture device and you have no idea what it does, ask a member of staff. That’s what they’re there for. They’ll explain what it does, and show you how to use it properly.
What else do you need to know?
Don’t splash out on too much fitness clothing – with a bit of hard work, it may not fit very well in a few weeks’ time. And remember, losing a few pounds or toning up may be your aim, but going to the gym has other benefits. As well as a healthier body, exercise could give you a healthier mind. It can boost your levels of endorphins, the body’s natural ‘feel good’ hormones, which could help cope with stress and improve your mood. Enjoy your Gym.
